There are plenty of different ways for countries or companies to demonstrate new military equipment. You might choose to parade it publicly through your capital. If you're Russia or Ukraine, it might appear for the first time on the battlefield. While in other cases, defense exhibitions might represent something of a lowerrisk forum.

Held every 2 years, the Defense and Security Equipment International is one of the largest arms expose in Europe. Essentially, you're looking at a semi-cloed shop forum. You can't just go as a regular member of the public that brings together high level representatives from government, militaries, companies, academia, and in 2025, me. And so today, I thought I'd give you a bit of an inside look into the sharp edge of European rearmment.

From a German proposal to build the next generation tank destroyer by strapping a VLS to an armored vehicle, the new missiles and counter drone systems that reflect a wider effort to learn, reflect, and build on the lessons of the war in Ukraine. To do that, I'll start by giving a bit of background about this event and events like it, what we can potentially read into them, and also what we probably can't. Then I'll do a run through some, but not all of the countries and companies that were represented, looking at some of the more interesting systems they put forward, and then towards the end, I'll build those up into a couple of big overall trends. A bit of a disclosure up front so you can understand any potential biases at play.
