Representation for women behind the camera has reached its lowest point since 2018. BIPOC directors, writers, and leads lost ground or stalled across nearly every major category.

The report’s authors were direct about what’s driving it: as the country experiences a powerful blowback against diversity, studios have relapsed into what they called “colorblind complacency.”

The Myth of the Market.

Before we get to the history, let’s address the excuse you’re going to hear. Somebody at a studio, or on cable news, or in your mentions, will say that this is simply the market correcting itself. Audiences got “fatigued.” Diverse films “underperformed.” It was never political, just business.

The data says otherwise. Films with casts between 41 and 50 percent BIPOC, which roughly mirrors the actual U.S. population, generated the highest median global box office of any cast diversity interval in 2025. BIPOC moviegoers bought the majority of opening weekend tickets for 11 of the top 20 films.

Horror, the most profitable genre by return on investment, is disproportionately driven by Black and Latino audiences. Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” made history as the most Oscar-nominated film of all time and grossed $368 million. The market is not rejecting diversity. The market keeps paying for it. Studio executives are choosing to ignore the receipt.
