And in a couple of key cases, I'd argue they succeeded. The US demanded a much higher NATO spending target.

And it got a much higher NATO spending target. The US imposed significant tariffs on imports from other countries, including its various allies, and despite calls in some parts of Europe to retaliate and fight the trade war out. In the European case, the party settled on a new trade deal that was generally assessed to be much closer to Washington's wish list rather than Brussels. But in 2026, renewed US demands for the territory of Greenland held by NATO ally Denmark appeared to have been a bit of a strategic bridge too far for that approach.

Mid- crisis on Greenland, President Trump publicly declared that there was no going back until it turned out there absolutely was a way back. And so today, with tariffs and military threats apparently at least off the table for now, I want to talk about one of 2026's weirdest diplomatic crises so far, and how an island with a population of fewer than 60,000 people appears to become the center of what I'd argue has been a monumental US strategic ror. To do that, I'll start with a bit of history about Greenland and its strategic position before moving on to some of the arguments the United States used to try and claim it, some of the issues with those arguments, and how this has all played out so far. Then I want to pivot to looking more at the strategic dimension of all this.

Why I'd argue this has generally been strategically self-destructive from an American perspective and illustrate that with some alternative approaches that might have delivered better strategic results.
