AC lines have a phenomenon known as "reactive power" loss, which increases with distance and frequency. Over very long distances, AC lines become unstable, and the power they carry can oscillate in ways that threaten the integrity of the entire grid. Furthermore, AC requires the two ends of the connection to be perfectly synchronized. If a massive storm knocks out a power plant in one part of a synchronized AC grid, the resulting instability can cascade, causing a blackout that ripples across thousands of miles. DC offers a different kind of stability. In an HVDC link, the power flow is controlled independently of the phase angle between the source and the load. It does not care if the two ends of the line are synchronized or even running at different frequencies. You can connect a 50 Hertz grid in Europe to a 60 Hertz grid in North America, or link two separate AC networks that are too unstable to be synchronized directly. The HVDC link acts as a firewall, absorbing disturbances and preventing them from spreading. The system operated in a constant-current mode, with up to 5,000 volts across each machine. Some machines even featured double commutators to reduce the voltage stress on the commutator itself. By 1913, fifteen of these systems were in operation, transmitting hundreds of kilowatts over distances exceeding 100 kilometers. The Moutiers-Lyon system, operational from 1906 to 1936, pushed the boundaries further, transmitting 8,600 kilowatts of hydroelectric power over 200 kilometers, including 10 kilometers of underground cable. It used eight series-connected generators to achieve a total voltage of 150 kV.
Yet, the Thury system had a fatal flaw: it required massive amounts of rotating machinery. The motors and generators needed constant maintenance, and the energy loss in the mechanical components was significant. For decades, mercury-arc valves remained the heart of HVDC systems. They were massive, fragile, and required skilled operators to maintain the delicate arc of ionized mercury vapor. The last mercury-arc HVDC system, the Nelson River Bipole 1 in Manitoba, Canada, was put into service between 1972 and 1977. It was a testament to the durability of the technology, but also a sign that it was reaching its limits. The industry was ready for a new kind of converter: the solid-state device. The development of thyristor valves began in the late 1960s. Unlike mercury-arc valves, thyristors were semiconductor devices, small, robust, and capable of switching enormous amounts of power with incredible speed. The first complete HVDC scheme based on thyristors was the Eel River scheme in Canada, built by General Electric and entering service in 1972. Since 1977, every new HVDC system has used solid-state devices, most commonly thyristors.

Thyristor-based HVDC, known as Line-Commutated Converter (LCC) HVDC, required connection to an external AC circuit to turn them on and off, but they eliminated the maintenance nightmares of the mercury arc. It demonstrated that the world could now move power across continents with unprecedented efficiency. The technology allowed for the construction of the longest HVDC link in the world, the Zhundong–South Anhui link in China.
