Artificial intelligence is the ability of computational systems to perform tasks typically associated with human intelligence—learning, reasoning, problem-solving, perception, and decision-making. But describing what AI does reveals only part of the picture. What matters more is understanding what it enables: the search engine that finds your answer in milliseconds; the recommendation system that seems to know what you want before you do; the voice assistant that answers questions in real-time; even the chess program that can beat any human opponent.
The field emerged as an academic discipline in 1956, when a group of researchers at Dartmouth College gathered for what became the founding moment of AI. The decades that followed would be marked by extraordinary ambition, bitter setbacks, and eventual triumph—cycles of optimism so intense they crashed into periods of disappointment and loss of funding, known colloquially as "AI winters."
The Birth and Struggles of a New Field
The early years were defined by grand promises. Researchers believed that replicating human intelligence was merely a matter of time and computational power. By the late 1950s and 1960s, they developed algorithms that imitated step-by-step reasoning—how humans solve puzzles or make logical deductions.
The problem? These systems could only handle small, controlled environments. When problems grew larger, they experienced what researchers called a "combinatorial explosion": they became exponentially slower as the complexity increased. Even humans rarely use step-by-step deduction to solve most problems. They rely on fast, intuitive judgments instead.
By the late 1980s and 1990s, researchers developed methods for handling uncertain or incomplete information, borrowing concepts from probability and economics. Yet these algorithms remained insufficient for solving large reasoning problems efficiently. Accurate and efficient reasoning remains an unsolved problem in computer science.
The field went through multiple cycles throughout its history—periods of intense enthusiasm followed by crashes in funding and interest. These were the AI winters, and they nearly ended the discipline entirely.
The GPU Revolution and Deep Learning
Funding and interest increased substantially after 2012—a year that marked a turning point in the field's history. The catalyst was something unexpected: graphics processing units, originally designed for rendering video games, began being used to accelerate neural networks. When researchers applied GPUs to train deep neural networks—layers of artificial neurons that learn increasingly abstract representations—the results were dramatic.
Deep learning outperformed previous AI techniques by significant margins. Image recognition systems suddenly achieved human-level performance; speech recognition improved wildly; the field had found a new way forward.
This growth accelerated further after 2017, when researchers introduced the transformer architecture—a neural network design that allowed models to process sequential data more efficiently than ever before. The transformer became the backbone of modern language models, enabling systems to understand context and generate human-like text.
In the 2020s, an ongoing period of rapid progress in advanced generative AI became known as the AI boom—systems that can create text, images, audio, and video from simple prompts.
What AI Actually Does
High-profile applications of AI surround us constantly. Advanced web search engines like Google Search process billions of queries daily, trying to understand what we actually mean rather than just matching words. Recommendation systems used by YouTube, Amazon, and Netflix analyze our viewing habits and purchasing behavior to predict what we'll want next—often getting it remarkably right.
Virtual assistants like Google Assistant, Siri, and Alexa respond to voice commands, answer questions, and control smart devices. Autonomous vehicles from companies like Waymo are learning to navigate complex urban environments without human drivers. And in strategy games like chess and Go, AI programs have achieved superhuman performance—defeating world champions and solving positions that humans cannot match.
But here's the revealing part: many AI applications aren't perceived as AI at all. "A lot of cutting-edge AI has filtered into general applications, often without being called AI because once something becomes useful enough and common enough it's not labeled AI anymore," according to one widely-cited observation.
Knowledge Representation and Commonsense Reasoning
Among the most difficult problems in AI research is knowledge representation—helping programs answer questions intelligently and make deductions about real-world facts. Formal knowledge representations are used in content-based indexing, scene interpretation, clinical decision support, and knowledge discovery: mining useful inferences from large databases.
A knowledge base is a body of knowledge represented in a form that enables computer programs to use it effectively. An ontology defines the set of objects, relations, concepts, and properties used by a particular domain—what exists in that field's universe of discourse.
Knowledge bases need to represent things like objects, properties, categories, and relations between objects; situations, events, states, and time; causes and effects; knowledge about knowledge (what we know about what other people know); and default reasoning—things humans assume are true until told otherwise. The breadth of commonsense knowledge is enormous: the set of atomic facts that the average person knows is practically infinite.
Most commonsense knowledge exists in sub-symbolic form—not as neat "facts" or statements that could be expressed verbally, but as intuitive understanding built up through experience. There's also the persistent difficulty of knowledge acquisition: obtaining reliable knowledge for AI applications remains a challenge.
Agents and Automated Decision-Making
An agent is any entity—artificial or not—that perceives and takes actions in the world to achieve goals. A rational agent has preferences and takes actions to make them happen. In automated planning, the agent has a specific goal. In automated decision-making, the agent has preferences—there are situations it would prefer to be in and others it's trying to avoid.
The decision-making agent assigns a number to each situation, called "utility," that measures how much the agent prefers it. For each possible action, it calculates the "expected utility": the utility of all possible outcomes weighted by probability. It chooses the action with maximum expected utility.
In classical planning, the agent knows exactly what the effect of any action will be. In most real-world problems, however, the agent may not be certain about its situation and may not know what will happen after each action. It must choose actions by making probabilistic guesses and reassess results to see if they worked.
Alongside testing and improvement based on previous decisions, having an explanation for why the agent took certain decisions is a way to build trust—especially when those decisions must be relied upon.
In some problems, the agent's preferences may be uncertain, especially if there are other agents or humans involved. These can be learned through inverse reinforcement learning, or the agent can seek information to improve its preferences. Information value theory weighs the value of exploratory or experimental actions.
The space of possible future actions and situations is typically intractably large, so agents must evaluate while being uncertain about outcomes.
A Markov decision process has a transition model describing the probability that an action will change state in a particular way, plus a reward function supplying utility of each state and cost of each action. A policy associates decisions with possible states—calculated by iteration or heuristics—or learned through experience.
Game theory describes rational behavior of multiple interacting agents and is used in AI programs making decisions involving other agents.
The Subfields of Intelligence
The general problem of simulating intelligence has been broken into subproblems: particular traits or capabilities researchers expect intelligent systems to display. These cover the scope of AI research.
Machine learning is the study of programs that improve their performance on a given task automatically—experience improves their results without explicit programming. Traditional goals include learning, reasoning, knowledge representation, planning, natural language processing, perception, and support for robotics.
To reach these goals, AI researchers have adapted techniques including search and mathematical optimization, formal logic, artificial neural networks, methods based on statistics, operations research, and economics. The field also draws upon psychology, linguistics, philosophy, neuroscience, and other disciplines to advance its core capabilities.
Some companies aim to create artificial general intelligence—AI that can complete virtually any cognitive task at least as well as a human. OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Meta are among those racing toward this goal.
Ethics and Unintended Consequences
Generative AI's ability to create and modify content has led to several unintended consequences and harms: from deepfakes that blur reality to automated misinformation campaigns and biased decision-making systems causing discrimination at scale. The concerns aren't merely technical—they're existential.
Ethicists have raised questions about AI's long-term effects on humanity, prompting discussions about regulatory policies to ensure safety and benefits. The balance between advancing capabilities and ensuring they're aligned with human values remains unresolved—and will define the next chapter of this field.
Where It All Goes From Here
The story of artificial intelligence is ultimately a story about ambition and constraint: the ambition to create intelligence, constrained by computational limits that proved far more difficult than expected. The field has moved from academic curiosities to ubiquitous presence in our daily lives—from search engines to smartphones to autonomous vehicles.
Yet for all this progress, fundamental challenges remain: reasoning efficiently, understanding commonsense knowledge deeply, ensuring alignment with human values. The AI winters taught the field humility; the modern era has given it scale. What happens next will determine whether these systems serve as tools for human flourishing—or something else entirely.
